Exhibition Highlight

Georgina Gratrix is known for paintings that feature expressive, impasto brushwork and humorous yet uncomfortable distortions of figures. For over a decade Gratrix has investigated how the painted image can both seduce and challenge a viewer while developing an immediately recognisable visual language that has a broad public appeal.[1]
Portraiture is a favoured genre with subjects drawn from Gratrix’s personal and social world, as well as contemporary pop and celebrity culture[2]. In her portraits, Gratrix, densely layers paint and adds unusual manipulations of the body to give the appearance of believability[1]. The paintings are fresh, energetic, witty, vibrant and colourful – yet melancholic.
